I read this book because I saw the preview for the movie. The book was wonderfully funny and superbly interesting. The movie - not so much.

First and foremost, I'm insulted. Insulted that Burroughs expected me or any other reader to accept this work of fiction as a memoir. Would it have been so bad to just say from the outset that it is fiction? After all, John Irving made a living out of writing fiction with eccentric characters in absurd circumstances. Calling this book a memoir does a professional disservice to writers who do write memoirs. I won't be adding it to my "biographies/memoirs" bookshelf.

That said, the book was OK. Although it was largely unbelievable, it was amusing and the characters were unique and original to say the least.

I would like to know what percentage of the book is based on actual fact. I may have to read Burrough's brother's memoir and compare the two accounts to find some measure of reality.

If there ever was a shrink that did the things and acted the way that Finch did, I hope he lost his license and was prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Do not be misled. This book is not funny. This book was recommended because I like David Sedaris. His books ARE funny, this book is NOT. It was difficult to read, had many moments that were far too descriptive and was overall appalling. And not in a funny way. I'm not sure how this book or this movie got played off as being either good or funny, but don't believe them. It's not.
I was alternately laughing out loud and gasping in horror. The author is immensely talented and it is a wonder he made it out the other side to adulthood.
To compare David Sedaris to Augusten Burroughs is to compare Woody Allen to Adam Sandler.
There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir,Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he writes, "And it certainly wouldn't be dirty after I polished it with Windex for three hours." There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back. But just as he dreamed of doing with that old table, Burroughs employs a vigorous program of decoration and fervent polishing to a life that many would have simply thrown in a landfill. Despite her abandonment, he never gives up on his increasingly unbalanced mother. And rather than despair about his lot, he glamorizes it: planning a "beauty empire" and performing an a capella version of "You Light Up My Life" at a local mental ward. Burroughs's perspective achieves a crucial balance for a memoir: emotional but not self-involved, observant but not clinical, funny but not deliberately comic. And it's ultimately a feel-good story: as he steers through a challenging childhood, there's always a sense that Burroughs's survivor mentality will guide him through and that the coffee table will be salvaged after all.--John Moe

(Enjoyable read)

(This is more like the Gerri Hill books I know and love)
After panning GH's last two books, it's only fair to report that her newest, Rainbow Cedar, is back to the well written, character driven romances we're used to. These characters are real to the reader--we feel their longing, their hurts and their sexual energy. GH's writing is good enough to want these books to be longer, more intense. I hope she'll continue to experiement with new approachs, perhaps challenging herself by writing a story about her wonderful characters with even more depth. But Rainbow Cedar is so good it makes you want to meet these women to see how they're doing in their lives, which is quite an accomplishment and the mark of a good read. Love your work.
As other reviewers have said -- Gerri is back with this book. I loved Hunter's Way and was disappointed with In the Name of Father. I expected much more from it than I got. The Cottage was just okay. Killing Room was suspenseful, but just didn't do it for me.

I loved the development of the characters and her structure of the story in Cedar. Drew and Jay actually getting to know each other so well prior to sex was fun and led to great sexual tension and flirting. OMG, Katherine was vile and don't we all know (shutter) at least one person as reprehensible and self-centered as her.

Agree also with an earlier reviewer -- it ended too soon. It should have gone back to Austin to address follow up (which had to happen) with Katherine.

Thanks, Gerri, looking forward to the next one which looks to be due out in the fall.
With her latest book, Gerri Hill seems to be getting back on track. She had, IMO, some misses lately (esp. Killing Room, Target and Cottage), so this was a nice surprise.

The story has a bit of a twist to it as one of the main characters, Jay, is in a relationship, albeit an unhappy one, when she meets Drew by driving into her truck. The dialog at the start of the book shows how well Hill can write fun dialog that feels decidedly real. The two women are instantly attracted to each other and start spening a lot of time together.

What I like about the story is that unlike in other books by Hill, Jay and Drew actually communicate and talk about what's happening with them. the attraction between them is felt and you feel for both of them. By spending time with Drew, Jay realizes how unhappy she is in her relationship with Katherine and how unappreciated she is.

Towards the end the story falls into cliches and a bit of a ludicrous storyline that had me shaking my head a couple of times, but it didn't really detract from the reading enjoyment. The ending was way to sudden as there still was stuff to sort out.
Gerri Hill's latest book, "The Rainbow Cedar," is reminiscent of her earlier novels, and that is a good thing.

I wasn't overly thrilled with her last two books--"The Cottage" and the Hunter sequel, "In the Name of the Father"--but this book has much going for it.

Jay meets Drew literally by accident in Austin, Texas. They are attracted to one another, but Jay's in the midst of an eight-year relationship, and Drew won't be the one to break up that relationship.

Jay's partner Katharine is a high-powered attorney, bucking to make partner and then strike out on her own. As a result of Katherine's ambition and workaholic ways, their relationship is on the rocks. And when a former lover of Katherine's comes in the picture, Jay can either stay and fight for what she has, or follow her heart.

My only dislike? Ah, the habit of authors ending their books too soon! That knocked one star off my rating.

A light read, a fun read, with enough sexual tension to keep you flipping to the next chapter.

After anxiously waiting, Ali Vali give us what we crave - more Cain and the Casey Crew in Deal with the Devil. This 3rd book in the series is satisfying yet leaves the reader wondering why Ms. Vali decided upon this specific ending. It almost is anticlimatic when the last 20 pages ( or last 2 chapter) is thrown at us. Was there a deadline that had to be met? I felt rushed at the end of the book like when the cleaning staff wants you to leave the theatre at the end of the movie. I wanted to savor this delicious tale and all its characters to the fullest. I definately recommend this book and hope you find it as filling as I did.
Having read the first two books of the series I really looked forward to the release of the third book. I was not disappointed. I didn't want it to end - a sign of a great book. I loved it!

This book introduces new characters and delves further into characters previously introduced, bringing them together with Cain and Emma for a continuation of the Casey Family Saga. Cain is the perfect host, the passionate lover and the strong hand. She's a butch with superior wit, who's a romantic but also both judge and jury if her wife Emma and their children are threatened.

Emma is supportive of Cain's family business and will support any steps taken to keep her family safe. She sees a side of Cain that no one else sees except the reader who views the romance between them and the vulnerability that Cain may sometimes show.

Remington Jatibon, one of the twins from the Jatibon Family and a friend of Cain's, meets Dallas Montgomery, a rising actress, and falls for her hard while unsure of her motives and who she really is. Remi is the heir apparent of the Jatibon family, her father and twin brother letting her take the active role, and teams with the Casy family in business.

The FBI is persuing them as usual but a bigger threat is on the horizon.

This book is a keeper. I can't wait for the next one, which Ali Vali has said she will write. Buy it. You won't regret it at all. I loved it!

The execution of Casey's planning is smart, entertaining and full of twists.
Ali Vali Keep you on the edge of your seat with twists and turns that are entertaining and well developed.
New characters and passionate lovers are introduced to keep the saga fresh and exiting.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I actually thought this was a better book in the series. The action was good and seemed well paced. What is particularly intriguing is the way Vali builds the characters. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that these are actually supposed to be "bad" people. Cain Casey and Remi Jatibon are criminals, but they have a code of honor that's stronger than most of the law enforcement officals in the book. Of course, this is a book about New Orleans where the police have a reputation. Cain and Remi almost come off like Robin Hood characters. You know they're breaking the law, but it seems OK. I did wonder that most of these crime lords have females as their chief body guards, but I'm not surprised about the rest. I know many gay people who deliberately go to other gay people for their services, medical, legal, etc. I keep remembering what a writer friend of mine always says, it's fiction, anything is possible. The ending was a bit rushed for all of the build up it was given in the book, but overall this one is worth reading.
A third novel in the Cain crime family saga; unfortunately, this one wasn't as good as its two predecessors.

Cain and Emma are back, as are Hayden and Hannah. This time, the action focuses more on the supporting characters of Remi Jatibon, Anthony Curtis (a rogue FBI agent), Muriel (Cain's lawyer cousin), Shelby (another FBI agent who has the hots for Muriel), Bob (what a slimy piece of work!), and Dallas Montgomery, an actress with a secret past.

The action flowed in this novel...it just seemed a bit forced in places.

And another thing...are all the hot, good looking lesbians located in New Orleans? Is New Orleans really a hotbed of lesbianism?? The female doctors, female lawyers, female FBI agents, female bodyguards, and female crime figures are all great looking, hot-to-trot lesbians??? Jeez, I like the fantasy life as much as anyone, but come on. It needs to be better balanced in places. It felt like "The L Word--New Orleans" at times, y'know??

Vali did leave it open for a fourth book. I hope that one will be more like books one and two.

(Another Great Book from KI Thompson)

I couldn't wait to get this book after having read KI Thompson's House of Clouds (which is stupendous by the way). I had loved the historical setting of HoC and was wondering how she would do with a story set in present days. I totally enjoyed reading this book! I started it and couldn't stop until I was done.

Ellen Webster, who is a history professor at Georgetown University, has a condo next door to formidable TV Newscaster Kate Foster. Ellen is a sweet soul, someone who everyone loves, who's self esteem about body image gets in the way of who she really is. Kate has everyone jumping, and for good reason, she's good at what she does and is responsible for a huge rise in the station's ratings.

So what happens when tables are turned and a high powered newscaster must face recouperating from an accident alone? Can someone who's self-sufficient and very proud accept help from Ellen, her next door neighbor? What about Ellen? She must leave on a sabbatical to tour Civil War sites for a book that she must write. [and here the author shines even brighter with her knowledge of the civil war bringing battlefields to life].

Buy this book, enjoy this book and then read it again in a few months. You know you want to! Right? It's a great read.

I have yet to review any of the books I read but I just had to share with everyone how wonderful this book is. I love this genre and read at least two or three books a week.
I believe that KI Thompson will be one of the greatest lesbian romance authors ever. She has such a soft touch with her characters. It feels as though you are the character---Amazing.
"Heart of the Matter" is a wonderful love story that will stay you with you long after you've finished. I too stayed up til 2 in the morning because I had to know what happened to these lovely characters. Ellen will make you laugh, cry and fall in love.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book to read and reread. Thank you KI Thompson for this story and I hope to read many more of your works.
This might be KI Thompson's second book, but from the first page it had the feel of a seasoned writer who knows how to weave a tale. I picked this book up last weekend and when I reached the last page I realized that it was after 4 in the morning. Anything that makes me laugh out loud and talk to the characters as I'm reading deserves as many stars as I'm allowed to give.

In Ellen and Kate you'll find smart, caring women who have their share of insecurities, but it's what makes them such great characters. They'll remind you of someone you know, and in some cases you can see yourself in them as they try to find what we all want--love.

Another great piece, Ms. Thompson, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in a good romance.

My reading preferences are generally away from hard, real-life pain and dark storylines, so I expected this to be my least favorite of Hart's books. But she does an extraordinary job, no matter what the subject matter, drawing a reader into the lives of her characters. The complexity of Anne's relationships and her personal journey to find what will fulfill her brought many surprises, and I finished the book satisfied at her growth.

I think a lot of reviewers missed the point of this book. First, it's not a romance, so I think the ending, while not what *I* would choose, is the right choice for Anne. (Setting aside the fact that I'd never be in a position to have that choice to make!) Second, it seems a lot more realistic to me than many ménage stories, which ignore emotional and general consequences and the outside world.

I urge people who didn't connect with this book not to disregard future (or past!) work by Megan Hart. She is far from a one-note author, and I'm confident that all of you who liked her past work will like her upcoming releases, too.

I didn't expect a whole lot from this novel, and started it with some trepidation, as it was the first erotic novel I've ever read. I was pleasantly surprised at its complexity and depth and power to make me think, perhaps even more than its obvious entertainment value.

This is the story told in the voice of Anne, a wife and daughter, someone ostensibly very happy with her life. To her surprise, life's circumstances lead her into changing complicated sexual relationships with her husband and her husband's best friend.

It's the sort of story that answers the question "how could someone ever be involved in something like THAT"---a "threesome"? After reading "Tempted" you can understand, you can see and even empathize (or at least I did) with how such an unusual sexual and even more so---emotional---relationship could happen.

There are many strong subplots, including family issues such as how we regard our parents as adults, how we learn to stand up for ourselves and ask for what we want, and probably most central---how we decide when to leave a relationship and when we stay. These subplots are played out not just in Anne's life, but in the lives of her sisters, her parents, and her in-laws.

"Tempted" has mystery, plot twists, great anticipation, and vivid descriptions. I gave it five stars because I think that the author did everything she could with the medium---writing a high-quality, provocative, thrilling erotic novel that appeals on many different levels.

Highly recommended, if you are looking for an erotic novel. Note that the language describing sexual activity is very explicit.

Having read both "Dirty" and "Broken", I was awaiting this release with great anticipation. The heroines in the other books were both very sympathetic. They each struggled to maintain a strong facade while their insides were a broken mess.

I never felt for this female lead. She had tragedies in her life but unlike the other two, she was weak all the way around and seemed to me to be more of a whiner than someone who fought tooth and nail to make it through each and every day.

I'm glad to see that others greatly disliked the ending. I thought it was just me. But after spending a Saturday reading this book in its entirety, it ended up being chucked across the room because I was so dissatisfied with the ending.

Saying that, I'm still looking forward to her next book and hope that Ms. Hart is able to recapture the magic which made me adore both "Broken" and "Dirty".
I had really high hopes for this book. I have read three books by this author, and the first I enjoyed, but the second was a huge disappointment. This was worse than the second one if that is even possible. I won't waste everyone's time with a synopsis of the book, since it has been done so often, but instead share what I couldn't stomach about it. A) This story is beyond depressing. Anne is afraid of the water after a near drowning, she miscarried as a teenager, her father is an alcoholic who has come close to delivering blows, her mother is an enabler failing to see the problems, and sister Patricia is an enabler married to a gambling addict. Sadly there are more, but you get the idea. B) Alex and James have an unhealthy relationship. While there are many moments I wondered about both of their sexual preferences, both were explained. The way James changed when Alex arrived was disturbing, and the deal they made about Anne was appalling. They have a bad influence on each other acting literally like they were 15. C) The manage was barely interesting. Sure the words were there, but not written well at all. The rules in place about what Alex and Anne could do together were ridiculous - why bother? D) Anne wasn't going to leave James, but yet she felt that Alex knew her better than James did even after all the years they were married. She also made comments about how she was attracted to Alex like she has never been to James. I am sure he will appreciate being second choice for the rest of his life. E) Finally, Anne's choice in how to say goodbye to Alex made for the worst part of the book. This is my last book by this author.

The script started out very promising, and I was ready to engulf myself in a story with the kind of plot that keeps you enchanted. Well I was just a tad bit disappointed in the book as the story progressed, and the ending was very diasppointing.
